About 9 Codrington Road
This very small urban garden in Bristol demonstrates what is possible by working with the characteristics of the garden. Despite being completely overlooked, with heavy clay soil, a tendency toward slugs, and a lawn that never succeeded, the space was transformed by doing away with the lawn. The owners retained the two original apple trees (the area was once an orchard) and renewed the garden around permeable finishes, coupled with lush planting for wildlife with largely native species. It has resulted in a quiet haven within the city, full of nooks and crannies, frequented by bees and small birds.
