About Alderbury
A large garden on a gently sloping and terraced site. There is a sizeable vegetable garden with both usual and unusual plants on a rotation, and espaliered fruit trees, currants and soft fruit. Adjoining there is a large greenhouse with stone fruit and a range of tender vegetables in season, and a small greenhouse for propagation. Below this there is a small orchard with apples, pears, medlar, mulberries, quince and nuts. There is a duck pond adorned with our beloved aylesbury ducks, with aquatic and marginal plants including irises and rushes. There is a lawn, formerly a tennis court, with ornamental beds and a dry stone wall with alpines. Also a dramatic tree sculpture of a hydra. At the end of the lawn there are rhododendrons and a row of pleached hornbeam. Above the wall, in front of the house, there are large pots and beds with wisteria and a fremontodendron. To the side of the house are brick parterres with colourful flowers in season, tulips and dahlias, and a sunny bank planted with plants that love a hot location. The garden has several different fig trees and dozens of roses!
