About Broomhill
We have developed the garden over many years, starting with just a lawn and a border near the house, in 1990 we added a trellised entrance and a pergola, now covered in clematis, roses, honeysuckle and wisteria. Topiary lends a hint of formality close to the house. Mainly herbaceous borders can be seen around the lawns. We have dug out a large pond in a very wet area, later we added a bog garden. This part of the garden is wilder, a lovely peaceful place with plenty of shade, a rare Montezuma Pine, rough grass and wildflowers. Many of the plants are deliberately planted to attract butterflies and bees, bird song is ever present.
In 2004 we planted a late summer border with grasses, asters, geraniums, as well as a rather rampant persicaria. In early summer oxeye daisies weave their way through the border, however gradually the grasses have taken over to rather good effect. The border is on a steep bank so it has always been a bit tricky. Paths twist and turn, you never see all the garden at once. The beds and borders are always changing so hopefully, there is colour from early spring until the autumn frosts. Garden seats are at strategic points to enjoy the views. The veg garden and orchard (chickens included) are now reached through an extension to a path behind the stables.
