About Cadhay

The gardens provide an appropriate backdrop for Cadhay House most of which was built in 1550 by John Haydon. He retained the Great Hall from an earlier house, of which the fine roof dating between 1420-1470 can be seen in the Roof Chamber. An Elizabethan long gallery was added early in the 17th century thus forming a unique and lovely courtyard with statues of Tudor sovereigns on each wall.

‘The courtyard…with statues of Henry VIII and his three monarch offspring, Edward, Mary and Elizabeth…is one of the treasures of Devon’-Sir Simon Jenkins-England’s Thousand Best Houses.

The medieval fish ponds, which form the centre piece of the gardens, may well have been used by the Warden and Canons of the Collegiate Church of St Mary of Ottery.
