About Canning and Toxteth Gardens
An elegant garden in the Georgian quarter joins the range of gardens from the grand Georgian terraces, to the restored Victorian streets. They include Granby Winter Garden and the back alley garden recently featured on Gardeners' World. The winter garden was created out of derelict houses, in an area being beautifully regenerated thanks to the efforts of local people. They join the unusual classically designed Spanish garden of St Philip Neri church. El Jardin de la Nuestra Senora was created on a bomb site after WW2. The church’s exquisite Byzantine interior, designed by PS Gilby, will also be open. In contrast to the Georgian Quarter classicism are the vibrant Grapes Community Food Garden and Squash Cafe garden in Windsor Street, plus the Wellbeing garden of the Liverpool Pakistan Association. It is a fascinating group, all within the historic heart of Liverpool, with many architecturally important buildings including Liverpool’s Anglican cathedral, the largest cathedral in Europe.
