Canning and Toxteth Gardens

The Canning Georgian Quarter gardens have extended their reach further into Toxteth this year, with the new opening of the beautiful Granby Winter Garden and an innovative back alley garden recently featured on Gardeners' World. The winter garden was created out of two derelict houses, in an area being beautifully regenerated thanks to the efforts of the local residents. They join 2 contrasting private gardens behind the grand homes in Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter, and the unusual classically designed Spanish garden of St Philip Neri church. El Jardin de la Nuestra Senora was created on a bomb site after WW2. The church’s exquisite Byzantine interior, designed by PS Gilby, will also be open. In contrast to all the Georgian Quarter classicism are the vibrant Grapes Community Food Garden and Squash cafe garden in Windsor Street, plus the Wellbeing garden in the grounds of the Liverpool Pakistan Association. It is a fascinating group, all within the historic heart of Liverpool, with many architecturally important buildings. These inc Liverpool’s Anglican cathedral, the largest cathedral and religious building in Britain right opposite the Georgian Gambier Terrace garden.
