About Clywd Dwyrain

We moved to Tretower in 2021 and fell in love with the house with views over the black mountains and the iconic Tretower Castle. As relatively inexperienced gardeners we saw potential, but faced the challenge of turning a low maintenance, gravel covered garden into a biodiverse productive space.

We set ourselves simple objectives. We wanted to grow vegetables and create a garden that would welcome pollinators and bird life. Every plant purchase has to have great aesthetics and attract pollinators. We have created rooms within the garden and adopted a pattern of matrix planting. All these ideas are slowly evolving to where we are today, in 2026.

The garden now has several distinct areas. At the back of the house is the “veg patch”, with raised beds, two small greenhouses, and area for organic composting.
At the front of the house a lawned area has been carved up into flower beds for a mix of flowering shrubs, roses, fruit trees and wildflowers. We have a secluded area offering a variety of perennials, roses, fruit trees, vine and three mature Wisterias and a small natural pond.

We hope that visitors will appreciate how we are meeting our objectives and attracting wildlife into our garden rooms. We hope that garden tours and discussion will provide us with additional insights on how we can develop the garden further. With the added opportunity to visit the Medeival garden at neighbouring Tretower Court.
