About Dolhyfryd
A mile from the small county town of Denbigh, Dolhyfryd is situated in a tiny hidden valley around a curve of the River Ystrad. In January, the steep, partially terraced slopes of its beech wood are covered with snowdrops and by early March millions of crocus have spread throughout the lower meadows – from corms originally planted in 1840.
From winter to the end of spring the water garden and shady areas produce a continual display of daphnes, sarcococca, hellebores, erythroniums and unusual bulbs. In May and June rhododendrons, azaleas and wisteria flourish around the Regency house and white viburnums flower spectacularly in the wood against the backdrop of beeches.
Wildflower meadows are at their best from June to late July when children are especially welcome to explore the woods, riverbank and fields. A wide variety of bird-life thrives in the valley where nesting species include grey wagtails, dippers, herons, woodpeckers, flycatchers, owls, goldcrests and tree-creepers.
From August to early October the well stocked walled garden buzzes with bees and butterflies and surrounding the main lawns huge hydrangeas together with species clematis produce dramatic visual effects.
