About Hollydyke House
In our early years here, the garden was a playground for our children.
Early in the year the conifers present a few areas of shapely green structures, with thousands of snowdrops peeping through. Surrounding the house is the white garden with roses, geraniums, phlox, dahlias and paeonies, and a collection of hostas in pots. The ponds are devoid of the usual tadpoles, all are eaten by the ducks, our koi have grown to a large size (big temptation for the herons). Summertime the water lilies abound. The borders are filled with shrubs, perennials, roses and hostas. Hopefully the vegetable garden will be productive – we will be giving more protection to the plants this year as the pigeons nibbled all the young shoots last year and the rabbits are happy to burrow even below the dug in netting. Many of the old bamboos have flowered and we are now replacing them with plants by the Misbourne which runs along our boundary. We don’t employ help, so we are gradually making the garden a little less high maintenance. In the gardeners old potting shed we are developing an alpine/cactus house.
