About L'Arche Village
L’Arche Belfast is a charitable organisation that supports adults with learning disabilities, L’Arche has three supported living houses in South Belfast and now a site that provides opportunities for day participants to attend sessions on gardening, cooking and activities.
The village garden provides meaningful activity for day participants through ongoing maintenance and development, implicit in this is the opportunity for a connection to nature and to social interaction.
The design of the sensory garden, incorporates a series of linking paved circles immersed in planting providing a journey through the garden with that all important connection to nature. The layout allows for social spaces or for alone time as required.
A sculptural metal moon gate arch and seat emphasis the circle theme on a vertical plane.
Ground cover and paving materials are practical and accessible yet attractive, sandstone and gravel paths within stabilising grid, allowing for sustainable drainage.
The biodiverse planting is naturalistic, sustainable and attracts wildlife, this includes shrubs for green structure, grasses, herbaceous and annuals to provide cut flowers along with seasonal vegetables to provide fresh produce for the kitchens and veg boxes for the wider community.
As well as the delivery of STH, the garden welcomes community groups and visitors to experience the garden throughout the seasons providing that all important connection to nature for all.
