About Lower Brookshill
Lower Brookshill comprises 10 acres of mainly hillside garden and woods in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The start of the River West Onny winds its way through the property and there are stunning views over and down a valley.
The owners moved here in 2010 keen to try creating a garden from a largely derelict stony site 950 ft above sea level. You arrive at a ‘pocket’ park with a bog garden and a meandering brook. Up in the main garden there are mixed borders, lawns and several ponds including one with more than a nod to Monet’s lily pond at Giverny. There is a traditional miner’s-style cottage fronted by a cottage garden. A shepherd’s hut sits within an annual wildflower display.
A brookside walk passes around a wild wet wood and returns to the main garden past a variety of trees, deer sculptures and the occasional cultivated woodland edge border. Across the brook a perennial wildflower meadow was started in 2020. Lots of places to sit and relax and eat your picnic or your cream tea. A small display of pre-war and classic cars widens the appeal. Sensible footwear is recommended and sloping gravel paths render the garden unsuitable for wheelchairs. Entry at gate is by cash only.
Please drive slowly on single track approach road and use temporary passing places if needed.
