About Pear Tree Cottage
These award winning gardens feel very much a part of the Bulmer’s apple orchards by which they are surrounded. They have evolved in the hands of enthusiastic amateurs who are responsible for most of its features. There is much evidence of edgy upcycling and recycling! Four spoilt chickens enjoy their own Medieval style pole house in a spacious ‘Henclosure’ surrounded by a pleached Beech hedge. A hexagonal ‘Hennery’ serves as both undercover dining area & winter quarters.
Over time, a rose garden has evolved with its own arched entrance. There is an enclosed Herb Garden with its own water feature, a Fernery, an uplit well with an original and working pump and a small dedicated raised vegetable bed near Thyme Square. York stone and gravel paving surround the cottage with a flag stoned terrace providing extensive views across the orchards towards the hills of Teme Valley. There are examples of mature Yew topiary as well as a fern encrusted rocky culvert through which water flows out and into a lily filled pond inhabited by newts & native fish. In the Woodland Border a log retreat can be found at the end of a twisting path where giant wooden mushrooms rest beneath the dappled shade.
A pergola leads to the Gin Terrace where displays of potted Pelargoniums rest beside a quirky recycled oak barrel seat. Further seating can be found beneath a Fig tree with more views across the valley.
On the practical side and, in a quiet corner, a discreet composting area hides behind an ivy clad screen with capacious home-made compost bays guarded over by an oak totem pole. Sculpted animal silhouettes can be found rusting quietly in shady corners. Wildlife and native songbirds abound. As well as bats and owls, evening visitors can also enjoy discreet garden lighting which illuminates many garden features including the 50 foot deep garden well, the Pear Hut Writing Room (& runner up in TV Channel 4’s Shed of the Year Competition) and the summerhouse. A Hartley Botanic greenhouse with uplit mini under-floor fernery sits beside the productive vegetable patch. Secret steps lead up through topiary Yew hedge to an old a gnarled Wisteria. As a Wisteria nominated garden, in May the cottage is clad with avalanches of purple.
This garden is also part of the much acclaimed: ‘The Gardens of Wichenford’ which is planned for June 2025. Check out the garden blog at: www.peartreecottage.me for many more details & photos.
