About Penshurst Place & Gardens
The garden at Penshurst Place is one of the most beautiful gardens in England and probably one of the oldest, with records dating from 1346. The existing garden was laid out by Sir Henry Sidney in 1580 and has remained true to his design. The romantic medieval house with its mellow sandstone walls, mullioned windows and ancient doorways is surrounded by the 11 acre walled Tudor garden, which is divided into a series of garden ‘rooms’ by over one mile of yew hedging. Each garden has its own season and colour, with a mass of spring bulbs, colourful herbaceous borders and hundreds of varieties of roses around the Italian Garden, in the Union Flag Garden and in the stunning Rose Garden. Penshurst is also famous for its striking display in early June of its 100 metre-long Peony Border. The history of this fascinating garden is portrayed in an exhibition ‘Seven Centuries of Gardening at Penshurst Place’ situated in the garden Tower.
