About Preachers Passing
The structure of our garden is a consequence of planning rules. The whole 0.76 acres is in the village conservation area. Sitting between the Manor and the Church, this is a sensitive site. In 2004, when we purchased it, the residential area on which our house is built was separated from the countryside portion (a grass field and a line of native saplings down the west side) by a Leylandii hedge. Planners, with whom we worked closely and constructively, required that the view from the River Til bridge to All Saints Church should not be impeded by either the house or planting in the countryside. Working with a garden designer, we obtained planning permission for the whole layout. During the last 17 years, we have developed our garden from this plan. The dividing hedge has been replaced with estate fencing and the planting flows from the more formal areas around the house to the natural copse in the south east corner. There are habitats, not least our pond, for a huge variety of wildlife and seating for visitors to enjoy the different views.
