About Ramsey Walled Garden
A Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden located within the grounds of the former Ramsey Abbey. The abbey estate was acquired by the Fellowes Family in the 1730’s. A new house with foundations of the original abbey was built around 1804 with work by Sir John Soane. The walled garden with work by Sir Edwards Blore dates back to about 1840. The abbey estate was leased for education in the late 1930’s and the Walled Garden gradually fell into decline. It was ‘rediscovered’ in the late 1990’s and a decision was made to restore the garden. This proceeded slowly to the working garden we see today. All the work and maintenance is done by volunteers.
Original features in the garden include extensive box hedging, remains of the apple tunnel, an old mulberry tree and the original layout. A legacy from the late John Drake enabled us to build a new Victorian style greenhouse. We grow vegetables, soft fruit, tree fruit with the apple tunnel and wall fruit, as well as herbaceous borders, dahlia and salvia borders.
