Rhos Eithin

A new garden started in 2020 which features very little hard landscaping, intentionally soft edges, and has an ethos of treading lightly to enhance ecological value. The owner also has a penchant for growing unusual and interesting woody shrubs and trees. The garden is designed to blend defined spaces for entertaining and relaxing with pathways that encourage visitors to wander.

About Rhos Eithin

The garden is the work-in-progress of Peter Wootton-Beard, an academic and occasional garden designer who has made his home in Aberystwyth with his family. The garden had been originally laid out in 1999 by the former owners, using plants from a nursery which closed down. Some mature specimens, including a large Eucalyptus and stunning Crinodendron hookerianum remain, but by the time Peter moved into the property in 2020, most of the garden was either laid to lawn, or overgrown with brambles. With mostly a shovel and a lawn mower, the current design has been developed in the time since (pre-photo included!) and new ideas are being incorporated all the time. With a backdrop of the beautiful Rheidol valley, the garden provides a sense of calm and escapism, but is still packed (and we mean packed) with many unusual species and cultivars thereof, including a wide range of shrubs and trees, roses, herbaceous perennials and grasses. It also has some interesting design features including examples of prairie style planting and repeating circular motifs.
