Rooftopvegplot

A nutritional garden with views across London, where fruit and vegetables grow amongst complementary flowers in six inches of soil, in raised beds on a flat roof. Trellis and greenhouse tomatoes. This is a tiny garden, so tours are restricted to six visitors.

About Rooftopvegplot

The garden was converted to organic vegetables in 2010. Since then it has been featured on TV and in the press as well as many books about urban growing and gardening in a small space. You can find information on Wendy’s website rooftopvegplot.com, and a regular update of the harvest on Wendy’s Twitter feed, @rooftopvegplot.

Wendy is a clinical nutritionist and health writer and makes ‘healthy’ cakes for visitors to enjoy in the studio below the garden. She is the author of ‘Glorious Summer, happy and healthy ageing’. Part of her philosophy is that growing vegetables and herbs, creating a green ‘room’ where friends can be welcomed and doing the gardening are all important to mental and physical health.

The shallow soil (150mm raised beds) is enriched with home-made compost. Growing space is expanded by trellises, climbers and inter-planting. A verdant and beautiful mixture of salads, edible flowers and herbs tussle for space. It’s like an allotment in the sky or a cottage garden that has been spirited to central London.

Tomatoes and peppers grow in the greenhouse and Wendy has kitted out a rustic garden ‘writing shed’ – all slotted into one tiny ‘Mary Poppins’ rooftop.

Wendy bakes home-made and nutritious cakes that you can eat at your leisure in the studio below the garden. She will be on hand to provide a tour and to answer gardening and nutritional questions as she shows you round. Sorry we cannot provide refreshments for people with allergies or intolerances. All cakes are home-made in a small domestic kitchen on the premises.

This garden will be of interest to anyone who wants to grow their own fruit and vegetable in a small space.
