About St Cuthbert's Hospice
Our beautiful and award-winning grounds are maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers. The grounds include a Victorian-style greenhouse, where patients can spend some time potting or just pottering, a Memorial Garden, woodland paths and mature gardens. The newly completed sensory garden proudly sits at the front of our historic Hospice building. The development of the garden in our 30th anniversary year has further enhanced the beautiful surroundings that bring peace to the many local families that access the Hospice every year, and its presence will help to make every day count for those affected by life limited illnesses in years to come. The garden both provides a space for relaxation and contemplation as well as being a practical space for horticultural activities to take place. The garden has been designed to be a dementia friendly space and our dementia support team use the space to deliver activities as part of our Namaste programme.
Seating around the gardens offers the opportunity for patients and visitors to rest and enjoy the peace and quiet. There is an ‘In Memory’ Garden with a stream, where those who have experienced grief and loss may remember their loved ones.
The whole grounds are bordered by open countryside and ancient woodland.
Information about the many services which the Hospice provides is available which includes support for the carers & loved ones of people with dementia, and information on our Everything in Place campaign, aimed at breaking the taboos surrounding death and dying.
As well as providing a beautiful environment, the gardens provide fruit and vegetables for our kitchen, and flowers to brighten the Hospice. Spare produce is also often available to the public at the Hospice entrance, in return for a donation.
