The Neuadd

Robin and Philippa Herbert have worked in the garden at The Neuadd since 1999 and have planted many unusual trees and shrubs in the dramatic setting of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. One of the major features is the walled garden, which has both traditional and decorative planting of fruit, vegetables and flowers. There is also a woodland walk with ponds and streams and a formal garden with flowering terraces.

About The Neuadd

The development of the garden at the Neuadd. was begun by Robin and Philippa Herbert when they moved here in 1999 and has become something of an addiction. When they bought it the property had been empty for some years and both house and garden were in a rundown state. However, the spectacular setting and the just discernible layout of the original garden encouraged them to take the plunge. Since then our wonderful team of head gardener Mark and his assistant Chris have achieved great things.

There are spectacular views of the Black Mountains from terraces and look-out points. Paths run the length and breadth of the garden so that circuit walks can be made through the different areas. Rare and unusual trees and shrubs collected by Robin during his time as President of the Royal Horticultural Society are maturing and the work continues.

The latest phase of development is the creation of curved terraces to the north of the house, inspired by a visit to the terrace gardens of Marqueyssac in South West France. Another visit to a famous French garden, Villandry in the Loire valley, encouraged us to develop the walled garden with decorative planting of fruit and vegetables, albeit on a much more modest scale! The garden at the Neuadd is steep, stony, wet, Welsh and quirky. We love it and we hope you will enjoy it too.

Spectacular views, water feature, rare trees and shrubs and a plant stall and teas.
