The Shakespearean Garden, Platt Fields Park

The concept of a Shakespearean Garden was first developed in Victorian England with the idea of creating a garden with some, or all, of the trees and flowers mentioned in the Bard’s works. With strong links to the suffrage movement and Edwardian society our garden opened in 1922 and was rescued from near obscurity by volunteers 4 yrs ago.

About The Shakespearean Garden, Platt Fields Park

Set within Platt Fields Park, this sunken, walled garden is in a glorious, secluded spot surrounded by magnificent trees; a real life secret garden just off the busy Wilmslow Road corridor. The main garden is laid out in 4 rectangular quadrants with neat paths delineating each area; an Elizabethan style parterre mostly planted with native species, a human sun clock/performance area, a veg & apple tree section and a lawned area entered via 2 clipped, hornbeam arches. The surrounding banks include a recently established herbaceous border, fernery and some interesting hibernacula.

Come and learn about the history of our garden; try the human sun clock, play hopscotch and wend your way round our new nature trail. We believe there is only one other public Shakespearean Garden left in the UK. This year we have managed to complete the bottom left hand quadrant of the garden and added additional planting with the help of a generous NGS Community Garden grant.
