About Townland
Both the house and the garden have undergone many changes and developments since we first moved here in 1975. Much of the 0.7 acre garden was originally an apple orchard until the October 1987 “Hurricane” blew down many of the trees. For years the garden managed itself while we both worked full time. Then came the garden plans – the first for a 50th birthday and the next for our 60th birthdays and now we have to celebrate 50 years living at Townland – our Golden Weeding Anniversary!
Our confidence has grown over the years as we have learned about the plants which are best suited to the conditions. The top part around the house has been redeveloped during 2024 with help from Ylva Blid-Mackenzie of Madrona Nursery and constructed by Alf Mackenzie of Arum Landscapes and we have enjoyed planting up in the style of Piet Oudolf. The aim has been to create a garden with all-year round interest and colour in all seasons.
We hope we will have managed to retain the essential character of Townland – come and join us on this journey.
The whole garden is on a slight slope but is fully accessible by wheelchair or mobility scooter. Six Fields Path which leads from Tenterden High St to the house, is a designated “Mobility Walk” and provides a smooth tarmac pathway surface right to the garden gate. Limited parking for disabled.
