About Vicarage House
A large gravel garden in front of the house with wrought iron gates leading to the walled garden. Steps down with white wisteria trees on either side and a white border with old fashioned roses, Alliums, Gaura, white agapanthus, in front of a semi-circular wall with an acre of lawn to the front.
Deep borders along the front of the house filled with daffodils, later Echinacea, Gaura, Dianthus, Cistus, valerian, Knautia etc and deep-red climbing roses on the house.
A sunken garden with path and seating area, filled with alliums, specimen trees, perennial geraniums, old-fashioned roses and various scented scrubs giving March to November interest.
A large curved bed with old-fashioned roses, Hydrangeas, Dahlias, Persicaria, Rudbeckia Asters and small specimen trees incl. Cercis and Cornus
To the side of the house, alongside the west terrace, there is a box-edged square bed filled with tulips, hyacinths, alliums, lupins and later cosmos, dahlias, salvias, zinnias
The walled garden has 15 ft deep borders offering April to November interest. Various roses and clematis climb over six painted obelisks. Roses, Trachelospermum climb the wall.
There is a double row of tall yew topiary drums with trained white hornbeam above
A centre bed of yew balls, low custard-coloured roses, lady’s mantle and a circular water feature. Large riveted metal troughs hide the pool from the walled garden. These contain Salvia, Gaura, Perovskia and grasses.
There is a gate leading to the borders to the rear of the walled garden, the arboretum and round to the Pool House Garden.
To the rear of the walled garden, the shaded border contains hostas and Hydrangea Annabelle are punctuated by perennial fuchsias. This borders lead to another long border which sits in front of a brick and flint wall. This is more cottage garden in style with Crocosmia, hollyhocks, Verbena Bonariensis, Echinops, dahlias, etc
A further large area is laid to lawn with a number of interesting trees.
Beside the parking area, there is a tall beech hedge and in front a spring border. An arch through the beech hedge leads to a yew semi-circle. There is a large urn containing grasses and surrounded by Lady’s Mantle. A new border will sit in front of the centre section and will contain orange roses. One gap in the yew hedge, leads to a semi-circular cutting garden beside the tennis court. There are flower beds along one side of the tennis court with rhubarb and fig trees, the rest hidden by beech hedges.
The cutting garden contains long raised beds and is full of Peonies, Dahlias, Cerinthe, Veronica, Cosmos, Nigella, Wall Flowers, Scabious and sweet peas growing on obelisks.
Throughout the gardens are large box and yew balls (all in good condition) pulling together the different gardens.
The Pool House is surrounded by long beds on all sides, containing vines, climbing roses, agapanthus, hydrangeas, dahlias and dark sunflowers later in the summer.
The Pool House garden, to the side of the pool house is surrounded by beech hedge and has six square beds, three edged low with box and contain metal obelisks with climbing roses and dahlias and dark sunflowers at this time of year. The three beds to the rear have apple and plum trees and are planted with spring bulbs and later on Nepeta.
