Walkern Hall

Walkern Hall is essentially a winter woodland garden. Set in eight acres, the carpet of snowdrops and aconites is a constant source of wonder in Jan- Feb. This medieval hunting park is known more for its established trees such as the tulip trees and a magnificent London plane tree which dominates the garden. Following on in March and April is a stunning display of daffodils and other spring bulbs.

About Walkern Hall

As we are one of the earliest gardens to open in the year the swathes of naturally planted bulbs do make for a rather a romantic garden in the late winter/early spring. The first snowdrops were planted here in 1970 and have spread naturally although I try to divide more each year after flowering. I have recently created a gravel garden at the front of the house with more mediterranean style planting such as iris, verbena bonariensis, phlomis etc. The classic borders were struggling so much in the ever increasingly hot summers and this is working well and makes for less weeding! My mother was County Organiser for Suffolk for many years so I grew up with NGS garden days – so I am carrying on the tradition and delighted to have clocked up 10 years of opening last year.
