Woodpeckers Care Home

Vibrant plantings of dahlias, crocosmias, and rudbeckias around the residents’ lounge provide an unusual distraction for both residents and visitors. In late summer, the courtyard, orchard, and woodland look especially beautiful, with views across neighbouring fields where New Forest ponies and deer roam. Spot the disguised bug house and a striking wooden chainsaw sculpture.

About Woodpeckers Care Home

Woodpeckers Garden is set in a peaceful rural location just outside Brockenhurst village in the New Forest. Originally a large family house, the building has been a nursing home for around 35 residents for the past 30 years. Many of our residents have enjoyed gardening throughout their lives, sometimes as a passion, sometimes as a hobby, and occasionally as a chore! Our aim is to keep that interest alive with a vibrant, colourful, and stimulating garden space.

The garden offers many secluded areas for quiet reflection, alongside a spacious lawn and courtyard for gatherings, parties, and BBQs. Over the years, we have been planting our woodland area with spring bulbs, erythroniums, epimediums, ferns, and ruscus, now coming beautifully into fruition.

Our pathways are designed with comfort in mind, providing easy access for wheelchairs and walkers, and are made from soft, recycled materials. Our gardener, Chris, has been with us for over five years, working two days a week. He is passionate about recycling and growing with the environment in mind—his Bug House is a must-see! Just beside it lies our small orchard, planted in 2018 to replace an old sycamore tree. Today, apples, pears, and mulberries thrive there, surrounded by wildflowers and bulbs.

The path then leads to a charming oak gazebo in the courtyard garden. A pair of cream-flowering cherries and a stately Magnolia grandiflora create a glorious, intimate atmosphere, a calm spot to enjoy a cup of tea and perhaps even catch sight of a woodpecker.

In 2023, we added a fine large greenhouse, giving us even more opportunity to develop our horticultural skills and projects. Come and see how we’re getting on!

From the allotment, a bench offers views of neighbouring red and roe deer, as well as the New Forest ponies, who can often be spotted grazing in the adjacent fields.

Ours is truly a garden of many pleasures.

You are warmly invited to enjoy our delicious homemade cakes, teas, and coffees, offered for a donation of your choice.
