Woodpeckers Care Home

Vibrant planting of dahlias, crocosmias and rudbeckias around the residents lounge provides an unusual distraction for both residents and visitors. The courtyard area, small orchard and woodland, all look particularly beautiful in late summer with views through to neighbouring fields of New Forest ponies and deer. Keep a lookout for the disguised bug house, and a wooden chainsaw sculpture.

About Woodpeckers Care Home

Woodpeckers Garden is set in a rural location just outside Brockenhurst village in The New Forest. The building was a large family house that for the past 30 years has been a nursing home for about 35 residents. For most of our residents, gardening has either been a passion, or a hobby, and sometimes a chore! So, we aim to stimulate and maintain that interest with a vibrant and colourful space.

The garden has many secluded areas for privacy, and a larger lawn and courtyard area for parties and BBQ’s. We have been planting our woodland area with Spring bulbs, erythronium, epimediums, ferns and Ruscus over the years. It is coming to fruition.

Our paths allow a comfortable ride for wheelchairs and walkers. It is made from soft recycled products. Our gardener, Chris, has worked at Woodpeckers for over 5 years for 2 days a week. He is also passionate about recycling and growing for the benefit of the environment – his Bug House is a must see! It is adjacent to our small orchard, planted in 2018 to replace an old sycamore…. now apples, pear and mulberry are surrounded by wild flowers and bulbs.

The path continues to a beautiful oak Gazebo in the courtyard garden. A pair of cream flowering cherries and a Magnolia Grandiflora add a glorious intimate feeling to the courtyard, A calming place to enjoy a delicious tea – and spot the woodpecker!

As of 2023 we now have a beautiful, large greenhouse to further develop our horticultural prowess! Come and see how we are getting on…..

From the allotment, there is a bench where our residents can enjoy watching the neighbouring red and roe deer, as well as the New Forest ponies, who can be seen on most days in the adjacent fields.

Ours is a garden of many pleasures!

You are welcome to try our delicious home-made cakes, teas and coffees, all for a donation of your choice.
