Woodpeckers Care Home

A vibrant and colourful garden surrounds our care home. We have active involvement from our residents who enjoy the wide paths, whether in a wheelchair or strolling on foot. The courtyard area, small orchard and woodland, all look particularly beautiful in spring and late summer with views through neighbouring fields. An amazing bug house, chainsaw sculpture and vibrant plantings will wow you!

About Woodpeckers Care Home

Woodpeckers Garden is set in a rural location just outside Brockenhurst village. The building was a large family house that 30 years ago became a nursing home for about 37 residents. For most of our residents, gardening has either been a passion, or a hobby, and sometimes a chore! So, we aim to stimulate and maintain that interest with a vibrant and colourful space!
The garden has many small areas for privacy, and a larger lawn and courtyard area for parties and BBQ’s. We have been planting our woodland area with Spring bulbs, erythronium and epimediums, ferns and Ruscus over the years.

Our paths allow for a comfortable ride for wheelchairs and walkers and utilise the latest recycled products. Our gardener, Chris, has worked at Woodpeckers for over 5 years, 2 days a week. He is also passionate about recycling and growing for the benefit of the environment – his Bug House is a must see! This is adjacent to our small orchard, planted in 2018 to replace an old sycamore…now apples, pear and mulberry are surrounded by wild flowers and bulbs.

The path continues round to a beautiful oak Gazebo, and the courtyard garden under a pair of cream flowered cherries. These and a Magnolia grandifolia add a glorious intimate feel to the courtyard, and are surrounded with lush plantings. A calming place to enjoy a great tea – and spot the woodpecker!

As of 2023 we now have a beautiful, large greenhouse to further develop our horticultural prowess!

From the allotment, our residents can also enjoy watching the neighbouring Red and Roe deer, who most days can be seen in the adjacent fields.
A garden very much for all tastes and seasons!

Delicious home-made cakes, teas and coffees, all for a donation of your choice.
