About 16 Arnison Road
The south-facing rear garden has a secluded feel with high fences on three sides on which a real variety of climbers, including roses and espalier fruit trees, are being trained.
The gardens, front and back, were planted in 2023, and designed by Christine Wilford of Green Arden, who worked closely with the owners, who brought their love and experience of plants and gardens (including over 400 plants in pots) from their previous gardens in Hampshire and Kew.
The layout and planting is designed to develop over the years and to continue to be accessible in the owners’ later years. So there is no lawn to mow; instead a variety of surfaces (brick, sandstone and gravel) forming seating and working areas joined by gently sloping paths.
The back garden is divided into three distinct but connected areas, to be enjoyed as much from inside of the house as in the garden. The area nearest the house has abundant planting in beds, pots and urns, with climbing roses being trained up the verandah and a battered much-loved antique armillary sphere.
The middle dining area is approached by four paths, screened from the house by mid-height Prunus Lusitanica, and surrounded by a rose arch and small fountain. The rose bed is bordered by strawberry plants and has changing underplanting: some annuals and plants given, grown and bought.
The last section of the garden houses the Victorian-style working greenhouse, raised vegetable beds, a variety of annual or overflow plants in terracotta pots collected over the years, compost bins, a comfrey patch and wrought iron table and chairs. The planting in a retaining brick wall to the back include espalier fruit trees and a variety of shrubs and herbaceous planting.
Part of the garage has been converted into a potting shed where annuals, flowers and vegetables, are sown and the home made comfrey fertiliser and compost are kept. Outside, there is a bench that gets the first rays of sun.
A sedum roof completes the garden and adds year-round insulation for the room with garden views.
There are a number of restaurants and cafés locally, both in Bridge Road towards Hampton Court Palace and south in Walton Road.
