About 16 Langley Crescent
16 Langley Crescent in St Albans sits on a hill overlooking Batchwood Golf Course and has a compact walled garden with a secluded area for restful contemplation beside a wildlife pond encircled by rambling roses.
Herbaceous and shrub borders surround an expanse of lawn within the main part of the rear garden and include an extensive collection of Phlomis, which Jonathan hopes in due course will be accredited by Plant Heritage as a National Collection. He has built up his collection with the support of Beth Smith, the former National Collection holder, and was particularly attracted by its drought tolerance and resilience in a changing climate and also its architectural qualities and elegance through the seasons, not least in the wide range of foliage within the genus.
Jonathan also runs a small plant nursery called Redmayne Perennials specialising in a range of reliable and more unusual herbaceous and woody perennials (including Phlomis) with an emphasis on species rather than cultivars, propagated in his glasshouse at 16 Langley Crescent.
