The front garden is designed around a wildlife pond and the circular paving taking the eastern ying/yang symbol as a starting point. There is a semi-wild area in the corner to provide cover for animals until the planting is established. The use of slate and gravel, front and back provides continuity, allows good drainage and greatly reduces maintenance of the extensive planting. Raised beds add a visual break from the slate and are easily worked.
The hard landscaping in the back garden was built largely to a pre-prepared plan with the exception of the cascade. This was intended to represent a rocky gorge in miniature. It is planted with dwarf shrubs and alpines to compliment the exposed limestone rocks. The overall planting has a Mediterranean flavour and makes use of plants with architectural value in the slate areas, herbaceous perennials on top of the rear stone wall and low-growing rambling forms along the walls near the patio.
