About 53 Mapledene Road
The garden is long, narrow and divided into five different sections. It has morphed over the years and the addition of two gravel areas and a small pond has opened new possibilities. The garden faces north, long considered a disadvantage but perhaps more welcome in this age. Nonetheless, the intense heat of summer 2022 followed by the long January frost devastated many of its well-established shrubs, including several lovely hebes.
Filling the gaps with more resilient species has been challenging, but fascinating. Surrounded by six neighbouring gardens, the walls and fences are smothered in climbers, the beds beneath crammed with plants in colour combinations. Interspersed with the perennials and new shrubs are many beautiful roses; Open Arms, Altissimo, Ghislaine de Feligonde all excel here. Geranium Bill Wallace and Mexican fleabane (Erigeron karvinskianu) have colonised the paths and an air of controlled, lovely chaos reigns.
