About 61 College Road
61 College Road is the owner’s first garden, after years tending a window box in West London. As such it has become an outlet for a wide variety of plants which, given its small size, are often changed with ruthless efficiency on an annual basis. East facing, with good drainage but poor soil, you’ll find the typical seaside staples, enormous Echiums (which grow like weeds in Deal) hollyhocks and fennel combined with more exotic imports such as Tetrapanax, plume poppies and unusual annual climbers such as Ipomea Lobata and Cobea Scandens. With over 40 pots lining the narrow borders, it’s become a place for experimentation, mixing annuals such as cosmos (lots of varieties) cleomes (if they decide to germinate) and succulents precariously balanced on an adjacent wall. Add to the above, oddities gleaned from local plant stands and car boot sales make up a typical unruly cottage garden packed with plants that evolve throughout the seasons.
