Cherry Tree Arboretum

Created in 2006 on 50 acres of unspoilt, lightly-farmed pastureland scattered with mature oaks by John and Liz Ravenscroft. The garden is located on a hilly area overlooking the Cheshire plain with views to the Pennines in the north, the Peckforton Hills to the northwest and the Breiddons to the southwest on the Welsh borders. It is a showcase of specimen trees with magnolias, peonies, dahlias, lilacs, deciduous azaleas and North American oaks throughout. Most notable in April is a double avenue of white Magnolias in many varieties descending to the horizon. The earliest of the cherries will also be opening. A series of trails and paths run between meadows and native wildflowers in the arboretum. Many of the trees are rare and unusual. It also contains 19 of England’s Champion Trees and a staggering 793 Champion Trees in Shropshire. It is not usually open to the public and it is a privilege to have it added to the NGS portfolio.

The intention of the arboretum is to showcase what can be achieved with time, great knowledge and enthusiasm. On this beautiful site the mature trees have been preserved and several thousand new ones planted. The collections of plants at Cherry Tree Arboretum are all suitable for cultivation in the UK.
The site is at an altitude of between 61 and 80 meters with soils having a Ph value of around 6 and down to 5.3. It is situated on a northerly and exposed slope. It has a great variety of habitats and is deliberately overplanted with 3 levels of plants including oaks, beech, limes, large males and major conifers.
The arboretum contains 19 of England’s Champion Trees and a staggering 793 classed as the Champion Trees in Shropshire. These trees are defined as such because they represent exceptional examples of their species due to their size, great age, rarity or historical significance.
This is a garden which connoisseurs will surely appreciate. The knowledge of its owners and their enthusiasm to share that knowledge in such a spectacular environment should appeal to anyone who loves trees and the seasonal colours which they bring.
