Crumble Cottages

Cottage gardens using a variety of different colour schemes with topiary surround our C17 listed Cumbrian Longhouse. The remaining 4 acres are divided into a water garden with ponds and rewilded areas designed to improve biodiversity, kitchen gardens using companion planting within listed bee bole wall, large polytunnel, wildflower meadows, butterfly borders, cut flower beds and woodland walks.

About Crumble Cottages

We arrived in 2013 with a plan to develop the gardens alongside a total renovation of our cottage and building two luxury holiday homes out of disused barns. Installing services and drainage required extensive excavations and most areas have been totally rebuilt using existing materials. The vegetable gardens were completely overgrown, the only sight of the bee boles were in documents. The reinstatement of the vegetable gardens combined with a large polytunnel means we are nearly self-sufficient with garden produce. The fields that had been intensively farmed for years we now manage for wildlife with our lower field completely re-wilded. This involved a large scale excavation of an underground culvert to introduce ponds, streams, the planting hundreds of trees and lines of hedgerows. Many of our visitors are keen environmentalists. In recent years we have started to concentrate on the ornamental areas around the cottages. As a professional horticulturalist Sarah has now found time to experiment with colour schemes and find homes for her favourite plant collections. We are always delighted to discuss all our developments, design concepts and future projects with garden visitors.
