About D & S Haus
It’s only 10 years since we inherited what looked like a slightly wonky 5-a-side football pitch – all grass apart from a few DIY superstore shrubs. Bit by bit the lawn was removed, with everything done by eye – this garden had no plan and nothing was measured.
There are many specimen trees – a baby sequoia and a baby Monterey pine to give structure (and longevity!), a cork oak, bamboo leaved oak, eucalyptus, red-barked strawberry tree, paulownias. Many palms, bananas, bamboos, phormiums, tetrapanax and beschonerias.
Things have grown fast and furious – the garden is now as vertical as it is broad, providing a sea of greenery from every window in the house. There are many small seating areas, and a deck beside a summerhouse right at the top. Vegetable beds this year have given way to an outdoor sauna, ensuring year round relaxation.
The garden really is an experiment – and although we have many garden design books, this really has been an anti-plan garden, with a wide range of influences from Derek Jarman to Ivan Hicks, and from Humphrey Repton’s Picturesque to postmodernism.
We’ve added plenty of sculpture including work by local metalworker Heather Stevens, the odd column, several mannequins and associated body parts, as well as coloured light discs. The idea is to have some fun and not get too hung up on looking formal or ordinary.
We hope you will enjoy our passion project.
