About Elmcroft
Elmcroft was built in 1925 and is situated in the conservation area of Royal Wootton Bassett, close to the high street and St Bartholomew & All Saints church. The garden includes many mature trees that are protected under tree protection orders, the tallest of which is a 15 metre Cypress Cedar that provides habitat for a collection of birds and squirrels. A portion of the original orchard still remains around which the current garden has been developed over a five year period.
There is a 64 metre length of Mendip Grey Stone gabion wall, which was hand placed by the current owners. This has provided additional planting opportunity for sedum and a thriving spider highway!
The focus of the garden is organic practices, drought tolerance, especially as we are on a ridge of free draining stony soil, and to provide for as many pollinators as possible. Underground there is a 7500 litre rainwater harvesting tank that provides water for the garden all year round.
The dreaded Box Moth Caterpillar has unfortunately put paid to numerous Buxus shapes and we are in the process of adapting both the garden and pots.
