About Ferndene House
The Holburn Beck flows through the woodland, believed to be the remains of an ancient woodland area. Previously completely overgrown, management work was undertaken to attract a wider variety of birds and wildlife. It been underplanted with woodland plants. The work has been successful in attracting wildlife. Work is ongoing in the woodland, as the beck is subject to flooding. The garden has chaneged over time – espaliered apple trees started in 2012; wild flower and grass planting in 2014 around swales to take rainwater run off; herbaceous border planted in 2014. Central area has herbaceous planting to follow the tulips and alliums. Woven willow work – fencing and gate. A gravel garden was planted in late 2017. In 2020 a new area was planted, with a rill running through it, but since 2023/4 has been redeveloped. A damp/shady area, with a boardwalk, has been planted with a woodland/clay soil tolerant mix of plants.
