About Ferndene House
The Holburn Beck flows through the woodland, believed to be the remains of an ancient woodland area. Previously completely overgrown it has undergone management work to attract a wider variety of birds and wildlife, and has been underplanted with woodland plants. The work has been successful in attracting wildlife. Work is ongoing in the woodland, as it is in the garden, which has espaliered apple trees started in 2012; wild flower and grass planting in 2014 around swales to take rainwater run off; herbaceous border planted in 2014. Central area has herbaceous planting to follow the tulips and alliums. Woven willow work – fencing and gate. A gravel garden was planted in late 2017. In 2020 a new area was planted, with a rill running through it, but since 2023/4 this is being redeveloped. A damp/shady area, with a boardwalk, has been planted with a woodland/clay soil tolerant mix of plants.
