About Ferndene House
The Holburn Beck flows through the woodland, believed to be the remains of an ancient woodland area. Previously completely overgrown, from November 2011 it has undergone management work, to attract a wider variety of birds and wildlife, and has been underplanted with woodland plants. The work has been successful in attracting wildlife. Work is ongoing in the woodland, as it is in the garden, which has espaliered apple trees started in 2012; wild flower and grass planting in 2014 around swales to take rainwater run off; herbaceous border planted in 2014. Central area has herbaceous planting to follow the tulips and alliums. Woven willow work – fencing and gate. A living willow ‘hide’ was constructed on the edge of the pond in 2017 and a gravel garden planted in late 2017. In 2020 a new meadow area was planted, with a rill running through it. This is being redeveloped in 2023/4. A damp/shady area, with a boardwalk, has been planted with a woodland/clay soil tolerant mix of plants. In 2023 an area of colurful stemmed willow (for basket making) was planted.
