About Green Island

Professionally designed gardens by Fiona Edmond, beautifully situated in 20 acres of mature woodland. Huge variety of plants, many unusual and of borderline hardiness, thriving here in the unique ‘island’ microclimate.
There are stunning mixed borders, a seaside garden, Japanese garden, gravel garden, water gardens, extensive woodland gardens, bamboo dell and tree house. It is a garden for all seasons with emphasis on scent and autumn colour, with the designer’s passion for acers apparent.
In Jan/Feb the woods are adorned with snowdrops, amongst the Hamamelis collection and the beautiful scents of winter flowering shrubs brightening even the dullest of days. By March the woods have come alive with huge varieties of woodland plants, and a large range of camellias. April and May are not to be missed with the carpets of bluebells and azaleas.

The mixed borders are stunning from June onwards, displaying the designer’s skill with planting combinations, and the water gardens peak with a fantastic show of primulas.
Giant tree lilies up to 8ft tall scent the island during the summer months and the colour continues right into autumn with many late flowering perennials and grasses. Through autumn the acers, and acid loving trees and shrubs bring the garden to a fiery foliage finale along with the national collection of autumn and winter flowering camellias.
There are many features around the garden all made from materials found on site, including seats, tables, an arbour, the tree house, fairy house and decking spanning the pond.
