About Heron House
The Heron House Garden in Aldeburgh comprises about 2 acres with a steady slope to the south, and superb views over the River Alde, marshes and the North Sea. It is quite well protected from North and East winds, but exposed to the South West. Because it is only a quarter mile from the sea, it is also generally protected from protracted frosts. As a result there is something of a microclimate.
The top half of the garden is mainly lawns and shrubs with a newly-planted rose garden. It contains a number of half-hardy and interesting plants – mimosa, iochroma, bottle brush, aralia, abutilons and agapanthus. The South East quarter of the garden has a cheerful cascade and extensive rock garden. The South West quarter of the garden has a stream and bog garden, orchard and vegetable garden. A wall of local red bricks surrounds almost the whole garden.
