About Horatio's Garden
Horatio’s Garden London & South East is located at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore home of the London Spinal Cord Injury Centre. The garden was created by celebrated garden designer Tom Stuart-Smith for patients, their loved ones and NHS staff to enjoy. It opened in September 2020. Tom’s designs carefully reflect the needs of patients and their families.
The garden is on one level, with smooth paths throughout ensuring that it is easily accessible to patients in beds and wheelchairs. The essential design features include a social space, private areas for patients to seek solitude or share with a family member or friend, the calming sound of flowing water, a garden room, pods and a greenhouse.
Throughout the garden the planting is designed to supply colour all year-round, whilst wildlife has been encouraged with bird and bee boxes. Tom Stuart-Smith’s planting plan includes rarely seen treats such as Albizzia julibrissin (the Persian silk tree), Acacia boormanii (Australian snowy river wattle) and Tetrapanax papyrifer (the rice paper plant) amongst a host of unusual shrubs and herbaceous perennials. May will be the perfect time to see the bulb bonanza of Spring.
The Head Gardener Ashley Edwards will be on hand to answer any plant questions and give guided tours of this unique sanctuary.
