About Milton's Cottage

Milton was a keen botanist (fellow poet Emily Dickinson called him ‘The Great Florist’) and few writers have been more influential in the development of the informal English gardening aesthetic. His description of the Garden of Eden in ‘Paradise Lost’ helped to shape and define the English landscape style of the 18th century. Horace Walpole, in his 1770 survey ‘On Modern Gardening’, stated that ‘He seems with a prophetic eye of taste to have conceived, to have foreseen modern gardening.’.
