About Orchard End
We moved in 2017 from suburbia to this house in the country with wonderful views set in a large field with five or six trees but nothing else. We had brought our collections of hostas and Japanese acers with us in pots and once we had got the house in order we began digging out beds and planting in the front area. We don’t tend to use traditional bedding plants in the main beds but enjoy having lots of brightly coloured pots of impatiens, lobelia etc to brighten up the house frontage.
Then we planted a tree walk leading from the front area to the bigger back garden and we are planting attractive specimens in it as well as the odd perennial. The ground is heavy clay that is very hard to work but rewardingly fertile so we use lots of compost and bark mulch to provide humus to better retain moisture and once a plant gets its feet in the ground it grows apace.
The construction of the clematis walk is finally finished and we are encouraging climbers like solanum and akebia as well as a selection of clematis to scramble over the framework to provide a variety of colours. More recently we have enjoyed growing slightly quirky plants such as achocha, elephant garlic, Tromboncino, Tetrapanax and yakon.
The garden is still a ‘work in progress’ but we are pleased with the progress so far and look forward to meeting with and chatting to fellow gardeners over a cup of tea.
