About Shieling
This garden was renovated 20 years ago to restore it to the original 1920s design in keeping with the house which was built in 1920. The garden was designed by Jill Fenwick.
The one acre plot includes a formal front garden with some interesting shrubs and trees including a huge rhododendron hedge.
The back garden includes a large rockery, several woodland areas, a mediterranean gravel border, herbaceous borders and a woodland area with a stumpery. There are some lovely old trees – conifers, Malus, birches, Liquidambar, cherries and plums, sweet chestnut and Acers. This garden has year long interest but is especially colourful in April and May with spring bulbs, rhododendron in flower, shade loving perennials and spring flowering shrubs. In August there are many Hydrangea, of all varieties, as well as colourful late summer perennials and grasses . There are winding paths and areas with benches to sit and look at the garden. There are about twenty different hosta and over a dozen interesting ferns.
There is a safe childrens’ play area with toys, an amazing tree house, swing and Wendy House. An animal trail is available for children.
