About Shuttifield Cottage
Shuttifield Cottage has been the family home of David and Angela Judge for over 50 years with the present garden dating from 1980. Situated at about 500 feet and facing south and west the three acre garden enjoys extensive views over Herefordshire.
To the south lies a small deer park containing two ponds and a wildlife area. Aroundthe one pond, which is fenced against the deer, are orchids and other semi-rare shrubs. To the west lies a 20 acre wood containing extensive walks. Though felled in both world wars, this is a site of ancient woodland and plays host to about 25 varieties of trees of which the wild service tree is perhaps the most notable.
The garden itself has extensive colour themed herbaceous borders and unusual trees and shrubs giving interest throughout the year. It merges with the wood where larger areas of anemones, bluebells and countless wild flowers together with rhododendron, azaleas, magnolias and camelias give special interest in the spring. The wood also contains a large old rose garden where the natural trees give support to a number of spectacular climbers. The gardens and woodland have been developed (and are still being developed) with a particular interest in the wildlife. Over 90 species of birds and most of the local mammals have been recorded.
