About Southlands
This inspirational, south facing town garden has thrived using organic growing principles since 2000. After winning the BBC Gardener of the Year for the North of England in 1999, Southlands has featured in many publications including Gardeners’ World magazine , The English Garden , Lancashire Life, Garden Answers and Garden News magazine. It has represented the Cottage Garden Society at ‘Open Gardens Exhibition’ at the MUSEUM OF GARDEN HISTORY, was a finalist, in the 2012 Daily Mail National Garden Competition and more recently, has featured on ITV Love Your Garden and BBC North West tonight.
It is divided into distinct areas that allow for the cultivation of a huge range of plants requiring different growing conditions. These areas include a courtyard, ‘mediterranean’ garden with its drought tolerant species’, succulents and architectural specimen plants, kitchen garden/ potager containing a large glasshouse, ornamental garden and a shady ‘woodland’.Water, being an important element of the garden, is provided by two ponds and a water feature. Strong vertical interest is achieved through the use of specimen trees, arches, pergolas and stunning hanging baskets. Many propagated plants are offered for sale during open days and a large terrace provides ample room for visitors to sit and enjoy the delicious home made teas. Maureen is a very popular RHS listed speaker, has served as a member of the executive committee of the Cottage Garden Society and has provided practical experience at Southlands for a horticultural student with a bursary provided by NGS.
