About Stillpoint Garden & Nursery
Charles Chesshire is a garden designer who has written books on Clematis and Japanese Gardens and began to create the nursery and garden in Symondsbury in 2019 to house his collection of plants. Since the lockdowns of 2020, he has attempted to marry his interest in Japanese aesthetics, especially that of Yugen, with that of enjoying the fantastic variety of plants we are lucky to be able to grow in Dorset. His aim has been to attempt to bridge the gap between good design and this desire for variety, and to lend a sense of magic, mystery and intimacy to the experience so that maples, hydrangeas, peonies, grasses, roses, geraniums and much more can huddle and commune with casual ease, and to yet be surprised by a rarity or a stray spray of clematis appearing in a neighbouring shrub.
The name for the garden which is Stillpoint comes from a TS Eliot poem:
“At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;
Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,
But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,
Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,
Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.”
