About 16 Rosebarn Avenue

The garden was created in Spring 2022 to replace the existing garden which had lain unkept for a number of years. The soil is typical of the area, a very heavy clay which has been improved with mushroom compost, wood chip, garden compost and clay breaker.
It consists of four distinct areas all tied together by a gravel path which takes you from the terrace at the bottom of the garden all the way up to the kitchen garden at the top.
The Kitchen Garden consists of ten raised beds, five of which are used for rotating vegetable crops. The remaining beds house soft fruit, cordon apple trees, herbs and asparagus.
The flower beds were created to provide interest throughout the year and provide a relatively low maintenance garden with a continually changing planting palette. Spring interest is provided with bulbs which pop up all over as well as foxgloves, Euphorbia and Dicentra. It gets into it’s stride in Summer with Sedums, Thalictrums, Cardoons, Stachys, Geraniums, Lavender, Roses, Leucanthemum, Echinops, Eryngium and Alchemilla. As Summer gives way to Autum Japanese Anenomes, Verbena, Stipa and Molinias come to the fore. In Winter seed heads are left on to provide interest as well as habitats whilst the Crab Apples, Cherries, Amelanchier, Hawthorn, Rowan and Willow trees provide structure.
The summer house and dining terrace provide plenty of space for relaxing and dining whatever the weather. Facing West they are an ideal spot to enjoy the last of the day’s sun. The log wall which sits beside the dining terrace was created from the large apple tree which dominated the garden before it was re-designed. It has gone on to provide two log walls and two stumperies so is still very much part of the garden.
The paved terrace and courtyard immediately to the rear of the house were designed to cope with the shade which lasts most of the day, particularly in Winter. The light colour of the porcelain bounces light into the house and creates a modern crisp transition from the house into the more sinuous lines found in the garden. The original garage which sat behind the house has now been re-purposed to provide a potting and storage shed for the garden.
