About 5 Burbage Road
Dramatic changes have taken place in the garden at 5 Burbage Road, London SE24. After spending much time, effort and money trying to save the box from the damage caused by blight and the box tree caterpillar it was decided to take it all out and think about replacements to create the same sort of strong structure that the box had provided. It was decided to use Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Beach Ball’ to replace the box balls across the middle of the garden and beyond. It was sad to have to remove the box as it had all been planted as little cuttings many years ago. The Pittosporum is a lighter green than the box and looser in form. It was damaged in the brutally cold weeks in the winter when the temperature remained below zero all day in the snow, but is slowly recovering. The box hedge along the terrace was replaced with the sturdy Euonymus microphylla. The scent of Daphnes and the Azara microphylla waft around the garden in spring.
