About Abbey Farm
The garden was started in 1963, when few trees were planted – mulberry, walnut and monkey puzzle. Gradually, over the years the garden has extended and the whole 2 1/2 acres are now under cultivation. Each area is complete in itself; in front of the house there are lawns and borders and the large walnut tree, which was grown from a nut from their great grandfather’s tree. This leads via the pool area to the mulberry tree and a small wild-life pond, hydrangeas, roses, standard wisteria and a pergola with clematis and roses. The next tier contains a gravel garden, monkey puzzle tree and newly arranged white garden. The last area is a wilder one as it merges with the farmland beyond. There are a small collection of trees and many interesting plants which enjoy the sandy soil. In the last few years a kitchen garden has been created as well as the herb garden in the courtyard near the house. The newly planted pleached crab apples provide a colourful hedge on stilts. This new structure is being continued with balls of hornbeam running up through the garden
A restored dovecote is open to view on visiting days.
