About Avening

Development of the back garden started in 2009 and features a wide mixed border of shrubs and herbaceous perennials with a stepping stone path winding its way through it. The planting conditions vary from hot and dry through to shaded which allows for a wide variety of plants.

The planting has a very relaxed feel where plants are allowed to seed themselves around.
The water garden features two ponds connected via a waterfall. This area also contains a scree bed, a wildflower meadow and a shrubbery containing various bird feeders – over 50 different bird species have been spotted in the garden.

The garden has two kidney-shaped lawns and contains a small vegetable plot and greenhouse. The latest addition to the back garden was added in spring 2022 and consists of a gazebo to provide a sheltered seating area during hot summer days surrounded by raised beds. This area provides a more formal contrast to the rest of the garden, with each of the raised beds having its own planting theme and has quickly become a magnet for pollinators.

The front garden, planted in 2017, has a focus on shrubs underplanted with spring bulbs and geraniums. The focal point is a liquidamber gumball tree.
